A New Surrounding
What is your new surrounding? Is it a hospital room without a view? Is it a bedroom converted into a makeshift hospital room with various medical equipment and medicines? Maybe it is a bedroom that needs to change into a “safe “zone.
New surroundings will always bring change. How you choose to respond to the change will make all the difference.
When you are caring for your spouse, elderly parent, or special needs child at home, you already have plans about what to do in the event of a crisis. But at some point there will come a time when you will not be at home with them. In order to feel comfortable leaving your home, it is necessary to have some things in order. Having a home emergency plan written down will alleviate some of the stress and anxiety during these moments.
- Home Emergency Plan
Having your home emergency plan filled out will give you peace of mind, if you are not at home with your loved one during a crisis. In filling out your Coming Home “Home Emergency” form you will want to list out your contact information, hospital of choice, who to call in case of an emergency, nearest crossroads, and directions to your home. Take the time to have an emergency preparedness kit put together and document where it is located. Plan a safety evacuation route from your home and practice it. For those with a wheelchair, make sure you know how you are going to get them out of your home. If you have preplanned funeral arrangements, have their name and number available, as well.
These are simple steps to take to get back some control. You’ll find that the more proactive you are as a care-giver, the more confident and self-assured you will be.
